Android sales grew 866% in three months

Android handset sales during the second quarter of 2010 experienced an increase of 886% over the same period last year, according to data revealed by the latest study on the mobile market by Canalys. Sales of smartphones in general increased by 64%.
While Nokia terminals continue to lead the world market for these devices with 38% market share, the truth is that the number of items of terminal Android-HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG, among others – conducted by the various telephone companies during the second quarter has increased almost nine.
“Data from our recent study clearly show the impressive momentum that is taking Android, which is gaining worldwide markets,” said vice president and principal analyst at Canalys, Chris Jones.
“In the United States, for example, we have seen the largest operator, Verizon is promoting Android devices from Motorola or HTC, for example,” he added. “These products have been well received by the market, with consumers willing to download and interact with mobile applications and services such as Internet browsing, social networking or gaming.”
And it is precisely the United States the largest market for smartphones of the world, with 14.7 million units sold in the period under review, representing 23% of worldwide sales of ’smartphones’ recorded in the second quarter, according to the study. Of this total devices sold in the U.S., Android accounted for 34% of sales.
Regarding the Asia-Pacific region, this is “equally optimistic about Android,” said Canalys senior analyst, TY Lau. “Android devices are gaining good traction in markets like China and South Korea, with a growing number of consumers who want more sophisticated smart phones,” he added.
Behind the USA, China ranks as the second largest market for smartphones in the second quarter of 2010, with shipments of 6.9 million units, representing 11% of the world. As for Android devices, almost 475 000 units were sold during this period.
