The “smartphone” RIM has a touch screen and a slide-out keyboard and a new operating system called BlackBerry 6 with a new browser.
According to analysts explain its delivery meets the need of the company to propose phones capable of competing with Apple’s iPhone and devices that use the Google Android operating system-like droid Motorola. RIM needs a major overhaul of its phones to attract more buyers, experts say.
The BlackBerry is popular with business people, but in recent times most of them are buying iPhones. Hence, RIM needs to modernize its catalog.
“This is one of the most important product introductions in our history,” said Mike Lazaridis, RIM president and co-chief executive.
The new device gives users the option to write the messages on the touch screen or slide-out keyboard. It also comes with a 5 megapixel camera with flash.
The launch comes after the United Arab Emirates on Sunday threatened to ban some of RIM BlackBerry service in October, unless access to encrypted messages. RIM said on Monday it will not grant third parties access to the data of BlackBerry customers, to satisfy the government.
RIM’s BlackBerry has long been the gold standard for corporate and government customers for its fast service and secure email. But critics say that RIM has been too slow to offer features that attract a consumer market much larger.
